Kathryn A. Carey was born on October 18, 1949 in Los Angeles, California. She attended California State College in Los Angeles where she was a member of the Kennedy Action Corps and the California Federation of Young Democrats. She worked for the Robert F. Kennedy presidential campaign in 1968 as a "Kennedy Girl." After Kennedy's death, she continued her involvement with the campaigns of California Democrats.
